To quantify the incidence and cost of cyber crime, we engaged the Ponemon Institute to study cyber attacks in every region of the world. In this 10-month study, they interviewed senior security managers in more than 234 organizations globally to collect details about actual cyber-crime incidents. They identified direct, indirect and opportunity costs resulting from attacks. The results not only detail the cost of cyber crime to businesses, they identify the threats that are most common and most costly—region by region.
But there is good news, too. Companies that implement security governance practices can reduce losses. And companies that roll out technology solutions like security incident and event management (SIEM) systems, intrusion prevention systems and application security testing drove down losses even further.
When you know which cyber crimes are most costly and understand what you can lose, you can better plan the security resources you need and know how much you should invest in them.
