2012 Cost of Cyber Crime Study: United States

This year’s third annual study in the US is based on a representative sample of 56 organizations in various industry sectors. The purpose of this benchmark research is to quantify the economic impact of cyber attacks and observe cost trends over time. Ponemon Institute believes that a better understanding of the cost of cyber crime will assist organizations in determining the appropriate amount of investment and resources needed to prevent or mitigate the devastating consequences of an attack. Consistent with the previous two US studies, the loss or misuse of information is the most significant consequence of a cyber attack, and it comes at significant financial cost. Based on this finding alone, organizations need to be more vigilant in protecting their most sensitive and confidential information.
